Lady Health Visitor (LHV)

Introduction of Lady Health Visitor (LHV)
The Lady Health Visitor (LHV) program at Royal Institute of Medical Sciences is a two-year diploma designed to train women as frontline healthcare providers in maternal, child, and family health. LHVs are equipped with medical knowledge and practical skills to deliver preventive, promotive, and curative health services, especially in rural and underserved communities. The program includes subjects such as community health, child development, family planning, nutrition, immunization, and basic medical care.
The course combines classroom lectures with clinical and field training in hospitals, basic health units (BHUs), and community settings. This ensures LHVs are capable of managing common health conditions, providing antenatal and postnatal care, educating families about hygiene and nutrition, and referring critical cases to appropriate facilities. LHVs act as a vital bridge between communities and the healthcare system.
History of Lady Health Visitors (LHV)
The concept of Lady Health Visitors dates back to the early 20th century in South Asia when the need to improve women’s and children’s health led to the formal training of female health workers. In Pakistan, the LHV program was introduced to meet the growing demand for community-based female health providers who could work directly with families, especially in conservative or remote areas.
Over time, LHVs have become essential players in national health initiatives, including family planning, immunization campaigns, and maternal-child health programs. With the evolving healthcare landscape, institutions like Royal Institute of Medical Sciences have strengthened LHV training to include modern medical practices, better outreach strategies, and community-based solutions to public health challenges.
