Introduction of BS Nursing (BSN)

BSN, which stands for Bachelor of Science in Nursing, is a professional undergraduate degree program designed to educate and train individuals to become competent and compassionate registered nurses. The BSN program typically spans a period of four years and is pursued after completing a set of prerequisite science subjects. During these years, students engage in a comprehensive curriculum that blends theoretical education, clinical practice, and hands-on training. The curriculum includes subjects like anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, community health nursing, medical-surgical nursing, and maternal-child health nursing. Students gain knowledge in patient care, disease prevention, health assessment, nursing ethics, and the use of modern technologies in nursing practice.

Clinical practice is a crucial aspect of the BSN program. Students undertake clinical rotations in diverse healthcare settings such as hospitals, community health centers, clinics, and specialized units. These rotations offer real-world experience, allowing students to apply their classroom learning, provide direct patient care, and work collaboratively within multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

Islamic medicine and hospitals in cities like Baghdad introduced structured care and roles for caregivers that resemble nursing today. The role of nurses became more professional and specialized with time, and educational institutions began formalizing nursing education with emphasis on clinical skills, hygiene, and patient care.

In the 20th century, the nursing profession advanced globally with the introduction
