Introduction of BS in Operation Theatre Technology (BS-OTT)
BS in Operation Theatre Technology (BS-OTT) is a professional undergraduate degree program designed to educate and train individuals to become skilled operation theatre technologists. The BS-OTT program typically spans four years and is pursued after completing a set of prerequisite science subjects. During this period, students engage in a comprehensive curriculum that combines theoretical knowledge, practical training, and clinical exposure. The curriculum includes subjects like anatomy, physiology, surgical techniques, sterilization methods, anesthesia technology, patient care, and operation theatre management. Students gain expertise in preparing the operation theatre, handling surgical instruments, maintaining infection control, assisting during surgeries, and monitoring patients.
Clinical training is a crucial component of the BS-OTT program. Students complete clinical rotations in hospitals, surgical centers, and specialized units. These rotations provide hands-on experience where students apply classroom learning, work in surgical teams, and perform essential tasks under supervision.
History of Operation Theatre Technology (BS-OTT)
The field of operation theatre technology emerged with the advancement of surgical sciences and modern hospital systems. In earlier times, surgeries were performed without specialized technologists, and support roles were limited to basic assistance. With the development of complex surgical procedures and advanced anesthesia methods in the 20th century, the need for trained professionals to manage the operation theatre became essential. The discipline evolved to focus on maintaining sterile environments, ensuring the safety of patients, and supporting surgeons with specialized equipment and protocols. Today, operation theatre technologists are recognized as vital members of the surgical team.
