Community Midwife (CMW)

Introduction of Community Midwife (CMW)
Community Midwifery (CMW) is a specialized healthcare program aimed at training female health professionals to provide maternal and newborn care at the community level. The CMW program is designed to address maternal and infant health challenges, especially in rural and underserved areas. It typically spans two years and combines classroom instruction with practical clinical training. The curriculum focuses on subjects like antenatal care, safe delivery practices, postnatal care, family planning, nutrition, and neonatal health. CMWs are trained to identify complications, offer immediate care, and refer patients to higher-level health facilities when needed.
History of Community Midwifery (CMW)
Midwifery is one of the oldest professions in healthcare history. For centuries, women have assisted other women during childbirth, providing support and care based on cultural practices and generational knowledge. The formalization of midwifery as a healthcare discipline began in the 17th century in Europe, with trained midwives emerging as recognized professionals in maternal care.
In South Asia, traditional birth attendants (Dais) served in this role for generations. However, with advancements in medical science, there was a need to professionalize the field to ensure safer deliveries and reduce maternal and infant mortality. In Pakistan, the Community Midwifery program was launched by the government under the National MNCH (Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health) initiative in the early 2000s.
